Fragile

Today S is here.
She cleans our house for us.
I am home to recover from my eye-surgery.

She always starts upstairs; and loves to work alone.
So I stay downstairs and do some workthing, some mails, some phone-calls until I notice my eyes are getting tired.
Then I knit some. So nice, I can do it without looking after 40 years of experience :-)

When S is coming down I go upstairs. In my sewingroom I work at my climatechallenge.
Leading is the song "Fragile" from Sting.

Onze aarde is zo kwetsbaar.

Our earth is so fragile. Thats what I want to show in this quilt.
My idea is to put the word "Fragile" on it as much as possible.
The first attempt is printing, also the first time I do it :-)
The fabric I use is way too thick; textile paint and paintsticks don't come through.
Only stains are to be seen.
Thats not supposed to happen.

Today I am trying to cut forms with a fine knife and 2 sorts of plastic.
Quite a challenge with eyes that don't coordinate very well yet...
The firm plastic doesn't work, the knife does not get through it.
The thinner sort works.
I have to put my glasses aside, en my face is about 20 cm above it.
But it works!
The thick paper form works too.

S is klaar.

S is ready. She brings the vacuumcleaner up and asks what I am doing: it looks creepy she says.
I tell her that I am struggling with fragility/ vulnarability
She doesn't understand off course, so I explain the climate-challenge, show her the fabrics I got, the try-outs that did and those who didn't work out, and I sing the song for her.
She knows it. "Nice", she says.

Goeie vraag...

Then she asks me, "Why do you choose that?"
Good question.

"Fragile" als leidraad.
In deze quilt, in mijn leven.

"Fragile" as a leading theme.
In this quilt, in my life.

Ik denk aan hoogleraar Brene Brown.
Zij ziet een grote kracht in kwetsbaarheid.

Ik ook.

I think of professor Brene Brown.
She sees great strength in vulnarability.

Me too.
